What makes images beautiful or unpleasant? In my work I seek to demonstrate the complexity of this question. I have used food-based substances that resemble bodily fluids, prompting dancers from classically trained backgrounds to interact with them in ways that draw out their paradoxical status. It is beautiful and unpleasant to observe. The dance becomes progressively more uncomfortable to watch, but the control of the dancers cements an atmosphere of connection and meaningfulness between them and the substances, which is both unsettling and intriguing.
