Messages to the Dead (2026)
Projection

This work was created in response to my Grandpa’s death and explores processing grief through art. Using archival photographs left behind by my Grandpa, who was an amateur photographer, I recreated his images. This allowed me to step into his footsteps creating a dialogue between the past and present. Through video and sound, the installation explores the act of trying to reconnect with a loved one by sending messages off into the unknown. It collapses temporal distance, allowing an interaction between memory and lived experience.

This project grew out of a fascination with arts ability to make concrete representations of abstract ideas. It explores how art can seemingly preform impossible things, such as bringing back people from the dead. This work engages with Roland Barthes’ theory that photography forces us to confront mortality. It plays on the static quality of photography as a medium bringing it into conversation with moving image and sound. In doing so this creates feelings of reconnection and allows for new memories with my Grandpa even after his death.
