Emma Humphreys
Papier mache, tinfoil, masking tape, acrylic paint series
In the face of a devastating climate crisis, we are forced to confront the reality that earth might not remain habitable. Unless we revolutionise the way we live, we will be forced off this planet and into the unknown.
Deep space.
My sculptures explore the lifeforms we might encounter in this unchartered territory. What might alien life look like? Inspired by bacteria, insects, and stars etc, I strive to find the perfect balance between the recognisable and unrecognisable in these paper-mache bio-forms.
Through experimentation with colour and form I began to prescribe personalities to my sculptures. I was interested in leaving them open to interpretation. Like a rorschach test, you decide what you see. Are these creatures friends? Or foe? Is space our solution? Are we really ready to move on from this planet?
