DIRECTOR’S STATEMENT
Frame by Frame was created as a hopeful response to the negativity and pessimism that often surrounds creative degrees and artistic careers. I often felt as though I wasn't taken as seriously, or shown the same respect, as I might have had if I had chosen a traditionally academic subject. Pursuing the arts can feel like a choice that constantly needs to be justified. This film became a way to challenge that mindset and celebrate the value of passion, creativity and perseverance.
Through Frame by Frame, I wanted to take the audience on an emotional journey from external doubt to internal determination and fulfilment. The film explores the pressure of expectations, the fear of failure and the struggle to believe in yourself when others question your choices. At its core, however, it is optimistic. I hope audiences connect with the message that there is no single definition of success, and that following what you truly love is reason enough to keep creating.
This film is produced as part of the Short Film Production module.
SYNOPSIS
Frame by Frame follows Rosie, a passionate, young film student conducting a series of interviews asking people on the street for their opinions on university degrees, especially film studies. As we witness pessimism and disdain for this subject, we come to learn more about the girl behind the camera. Through a series of behind-the-scenes clips, excerpts from the creative process and scenes of Rosie’s adolescence, we discover her passion for filmmaking and watch her grow in confidence and skill through a sequence of her own creations. This meta, coming-of-age short film tackles what it means to pursue your passions in a world which tells you not to.
