DIRECTOR’S STATEMENT


I knew from the start that I wanted to make a film true to myself, and Gringa is exactly that. Lucia is a mirror of myself, and any moments in the film, whether entire scenes or minor comments, were taken from experiences I have had personally. Her story intertwines with mine to create an authentic depiction of what life can be like for a diasporic individual.

I am so grateful that I had the opportunity to bring a narrative with Ecuadorian focus to life with Gringa, and am so pleased I got to work with so many of my friends, and even some new people, on a project that is very near and dear to my heart.

This film is produced as part of my practice-based dissertation project.



SYNOPSIS

Gringa follows the story of Lucia, a dual heritage English-Ecuadorian, who struggles to connect with her Latin American identity whilst living in the UK as a university student. Lucia is faced with the people around her- her partner, acquaintances, a lecturer- making seemingly subtle remarks about her identity, sending her down a spiral of self-criticism, comparison, and doubt. Embedded with themes of displacement, disconnection, and nostalgia, Gringa brings into question how stereotypes and expectations can isolate and alienate one further from a home that already feels far beyond reach.
