I am interested in how landscapes hold evidence of both presence and intervention, and how these traces become embedded within experience and reshaped through memory over time. My work explores human presence within rural landscapes through drawing. Working with paper, soft pastel, charcoal, ink, and found pigments gathered directly from the environment — including stone and sand — I use the material qualities of the landscape as part of the process itself.
My work begins with small drawings made on location across the West Pennine Moors, the Yorkshire Moors, and the Lake District. These landscapes are significant to me as they are places where I spend much of my time walking and climbing. By working directly within these environments and incorporating materials sourced from them, I establish a physical and emotional connection to place.
In the studio, these drawings are reworked and layered through memory and personal experience. Through repeated mark-making, editing, and accumulating the drawings, they shift away from direct representation toward something more fragmented and atmospheric which captures the embodied experience.
The layered surfaces reflect the instability of remembering, where details emerge, disappear, and change through experience, while also exploring the ways human activity leaves lasting marks upon the landscape.
