Left Alone
(Pollyanna Harrison, 2026)

DIRECTOR’S STATEMENT

I have always been absolutely in awe of one-shot cinema, particularly in Adolescence and Boiling Point. Taking inspiration from these with Left Alone., I wanted to explore how the one-shot form can immerse both actor and spectator within the same continuous emotional experience. By refusing cuts and spatial relief, combining principles of both film and theatre, Left Alone. aims to prioritise psychological presence over constructed cinematic manipulation.

The film forces actor and spectator to endure an emotional trajectory in real time, using uninterrupted duration to create an experience where both must inhabit Nina’s world rather than passively observe it.

This film is produced as part of my practice-based dissertation project.

SYNOPSIS

Told entirely in one continuous shot, Left Alone. traps the audience inside Nina’s unraveling mind in real time. Following the death of her sister, Nina is brought into a police interrogation room to recount the events of the previous night. Calm at first, she faces increasingly probing questions from an ambiguous interrogator as cracks begin to form in her story. The camerawork, absence of editorial relief, and escalating expressionist lighting visualises Nina’s internal collapse, allowing the environment itself to reflect her unraveling psyche. Eventually, Nina confesses that a confrontation with her sister turned fatal after discovering she had known about years of abuse from their father. Though she never intended to kill her, Nina admits she chose to leave her sister to die - leaving us with the question: What if doing nothing was the most violent choice?
