Letter To My Younger Self
(Hana Achim, 2025)

DIRECTOR’S STATEMENT

I have never previously made a film this personal before, nor one so rooted in archival footage and post-production experimentation. Since the material already existed, the creative process became less about capturing new images and more about rediscovering meaning within memories from the past. Through layering, editing, sound, and rhythm, I began finding emotional connections between childhood and the present moment. What emerged was not simply a documentation of growing up, but a reflection on memory itself and the bittersweet realisation that childhood can only be revisited through recollection, never fully returned to.

This film was produced as part of the Experimental Production module.

SYNOPSIS

This experimental found footage film reflects on childhood through personal home videos, layered imagery, and a spoken letter written to my younger self. Using archival footage of myself and my family growing up, the film revisits nostalgic moments of play, celebration, and everyday family life, exploring how childhood memories remain emotionally vivid over time. The film creates a dream-like visual style inspired by the heightened way children often experience the world. The film moves fluidly through fragments of memory, blending past and present together to create an emotional and reflective portrait of growing up.
