REDBELL
(Javier Juste Alvarez, 2026)

DIRECTOR’S STATEMENT

At its core, REDBELL aims to adapt the Urban Legend for the digital age. These stories have long outgrown the campfire, evolving to reflect contemporary anxieties. The film reflects this evolution by drawing on established horror tropes, adapting elements from slashers and folk-horror narratives, but placing them within the digital spaces we engage with every day. REDBELL explores how urban legends survive through acts of ostension, thriving by being anonymously shared, reinterpreted and sustained through active participation. At the heart of every urban legend is ongoing debate of their credibility. As such, ambiguity became central to the REDBELL’s narrative. By the time the credits roll, many questions remain unanswered, but seeds of uncertainty have been planted in the hope of provoking discussions in the audience, making them active participants in the Legend. Ultimately, REDBELL illustrates how these stories have infiltrated the networks, and behaviours that shape our everyday lives.

This film is produced as part of my practice-based dissertation project.

SYNOPSIS

When four recent University graduates decide to participate in a viral ritual tied to an urban legend, their playful antics soon descend into madness. Unsettling and sinister events begin unfolding around them as they receive a series of strange messages from a supernatural entity known only as Robin Redbell. Has the group unwittingly awakened an ancient evil or is something far more human at play?
